about

Gates of Consciousness (Ft. Faith Mystic)

There are many gates to a person's consciousness. There is the initial gate of perception, where an event causes a signal in the brain which sets up some sort of electrochemical reaction that results in what we call 'perception'. In other words, taking in information from one's environment via sensory organs and creating images or ideas from it. This leads to forming concepts, and concepts lead to perceptions based on those conceptual understandings.

The human mind is a two-way gateway, at once both open and closed. This is because the brain does not only transport signals from the outside inwards, but also vice versa. There are many doors that we can pass through to access different stimuli or ideas: eyes for light; ears for sound waves; nostrils for smells and so on. These are all openings to our minds through which information may flow in. It seems that our body facilitates this process rather well as mammals (and some other creatures) have evolved with an extensive range of sensory organs able to receive and send vital information about the world around them.

The gates of consciousness are the transition points between conscious and unconscious thought. They can be simple, such as blinking or falling asleep, or complex, such as an emotional response to a situation.
The gates of consciousness are relevant to the degree that they determine whether or not we experience events. The reason why this is important is that consciousness gives us a unique perspective on our experiences and allows us to process them in ways that allow for greater understanding.

Blinking is a gate of consciousness that allows us to filter out visual information. Thus, if there was an infinite amount of light reflecting off our eyes at all times, we would eventually go insane.
Falling asleep is another gate of consciousness that allows us to filter out memory information. If we remembered every moment of our lives, it would be impossible to function.

Emotional responses are gates of consciousness that allow us to filter out information about our environment. As such, if we became extremely angry every time someone cut us off in traffic, we would not be able to function.

The relevance of these gates of consciousness is that they determine whether we are capable of processing information in a functional manner.
